Dental hygiene is your secret weapon in the battle against gum disease and tooth decay. Why? Because it’s the fastest, cheapest and simplest way to stay on top of your oral health. Dental hygiene is all about controlling plaque – the sticky film that constantly builds up around the gum line, making teeth and gums vulnerable to decay and disease unless it is properly brushed away. If left to its own devices, plaque hardens into tartar, a calculus that can ony be removed efficiently by the hygienist, and which creates the ideal environment for bad bacteria to thrive.
Gum disease and tooth decay can lie undetected for some time – years or even decades if you avoid visiting the dentist. By the time these slow and silent conditions cause the kind of symptoms that force you to see the dentist for pain relief, it’s likely that they will have escalated to the point where extractions and costly resorations are the only course of action available to you.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! At Westwood Dental Practice we understand how easy it is to let a good oral hygiene routine fall by the wayside. That’s why we encourage all our patients to combine a regular check-up at the dentist with a biannual visit to the hygienist.
Scale and polish.
This is like a professional deep clean, which only a hygienist or dentist can carry out, reaching the places your toothbrush can’t always get to. Disease-causing plaque and tartar are scraped away; stains caused by soking, or consuming dark products like coffee and red wine, are lifted; and teeth are buffed to a smooth shine that not only gives a dazzling smile, but helps prevent plaque from reattaching to the gum line.
Diet and health advice.
Prevention is key to good oral health, and your hygienist is qualified to offer professional guidance on the best diet you should be consuming for the sake of your teeth, as well as health tips such as giving up smoking.
The hygienist will make sure that you are equipped to carry out the best possible oral hygiene at home, with advice on technique for brushing and flossing, as well as the best products for your teeth.
